August 6 Concert Information
Meet the Guest Artists
Today's Date July 28, 2000 -- St. Joseph Michigan
Director of the St. Joseph Municipal Band, Dr. Donald Moely, indicated
the band concerts scheduled for Sunday at the John E. N. Howard Band
Shell continue with the last half of the 2000 summer season on the
August 6 double concerts at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.. This Sunday concerts
will feature the vocal sounds of Julie Andrews, performed by guest vocal
soloist, Brinden Brown, and an appearance of the Vi Shafer Dancers.
Other concert fare will include band member Stacie Detgen performing a
French horn solo with the band, guest conducted by her mother, Dixie
Detgen.
BRINDEN BROWN, a native of Elkhart, Indiana, moved to Edwardsburg,
Michigan during high school. After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy
in Interlochen, Michigan, her senior year, she attended Eastman School of Music
in Rochester, New York, for four years majoring in vocal performance. For the
past three years she has been a student at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Her vocal teachers have included Randi Pickley and Joan Troyer of Elkhart,
Jeffery Norris at Interlochen Arts Academy, Rita Shane at Eastman School of
Music. She is currently a student of Victoria Garrett at Bethel College. A
veteran of the stage since her youth, Miss Brown has performed a variety
of both musical theatre and opera roles including Edith in The Pirates of
Penzance, Lola in Gallantry, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro,
Despina in Cosi Fan Tutti, Lauretta in Gianni Schicci, Golde in Fiddler
on the Roof, and Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie. In addition, Miss Brown has
been the soprano soloist for a number of concert appearances in the Michiana
area. For the concerts Sunday, she will sing some of the main songs of do
"The Sound of Music."
The VI SHAFER DANCERS are from the Vi Shafer Dance School in Coloma. The
dancers are from Coloma, Watervliet, South Haven, St. Joseph, Covert, Hartford
and Bangor. The age of the dancers are from 9-25. They are trained
in ballet, tap and jazz. They will perform in a
variety of different routines with each costume being chosen
specifically for that dance. All choreography is by Vi Shafer, Director
of the group. These dancers are busy in the summer months performing at
many festivals, fairs and libraries. Former dance groups have performed
all over the world. This group will be going to Disney World in Florida to
perform. Many former students are now performing the theaters, TV, Movies
and Videos. Some hold a master's degree in dance, while others own
production companies, and some are electrical engineers in stage lighting,
others are models for advertising agencies, and many dance for the love of
dance.
The Vi Shafer Dancers performing in the concerts are Heather Anderson,
Anna Burke, Kamille Colombel, Gina Genovese, Jenna, Karen, Ashley
Sexton, Shanell Sloan, Katie Termeer, Elizabeth Veine. A special
performance will be done by: Sarah Davis, Brad Heeter, and Amy Mullauer
STACIE DETGEN, has been a member of the St. Joe Municipal Band for 21
years and is in her 13th year of teaching instrumental music education and her
8th year at Charlotte Junior High School. She is a native of Buchanan, and
began playing the French Horn in 5th grade. Stacie has a Bachelors Degree
from Michigan State University and a Master of Music Education degree from
VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. Ms. Detgen has been a member
of the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra, the Lansing Concert Band, the
Meridian Community Band, the Capitol Area Brass Quintet, the Charlotte Lawrence
Avenue Methodist Church orchestra and brass choir. Stacie will perform the
first movement of a contemporary composition by John Zdechlik
The concert will include: the popular Sousa march "Sempre Fidelis,"
"Big
Band Salute," featuring some of the favorite 'big band' tunes. Other
marches featured will include "Glory of the Gridiron," by Harry
Alford,
and "The Screamer," by Fred Jewell.
The Concerts continue and the John E. N. Howard Band Shell on the shores of Lake
Michigan in downtown St. Joseph each Sunday through September 3 and concluding
with its final double concert series on Labor Day, Monday, September 4.
