In the 1988 season the director position was given to co directors Dr. Donald Moely, at that time Director of Bands and Head of the Music Department at Lake Michigan College and Karlton Keller, Director of Bands at the Andrews Academy.  After splitting the summer seasons for concerts for two years, Karlton Keller moved from the area to accept a music director position in California, and Dr. Moely assumed full responsibilities as Director of the Municipal Band.  This summer Moely begins his 13th season with the Band.

From the band that was funded originally by downtown merchants to attract people from cruise ships, to the current tax supported band, there has been some type of band in the City of St. Joseph since the 1890's.  The present director, Dr Moely, indicated that "during the periods in our national history when the economies of various communities felt the problems of the depression and WW II, many communities that had earlier voted a band tax to support their own town
band, voted the band tax out.  St. Joseph was one of the few that did not vote this tax out, hence the St. Joseph community today has continued to support the 'best outdoor free ticket concert event' in the entire area each summer in downtown St. Joseph."
